The Dungeon Crawler RPG PDF’s are on hand . . . or device? Not sure. But anyway – I have the PDF’s and boy do I have to say: there is A LOT to go thru. I’ve spent a bit this morning just going thru the many pages of the Starter set books, and just in that alone there is a myriad of options, tables, and the like. It’s funny, when everything went live on Reddit, I saw posts crying that it was setting you up to just play thru Carl and Donut’s adventures, but I’m seeing so much potential for the DM’s own spin. You could easily change the date or the host race, and it changes everything about the plot and story.
The Gamemasters toolkit in the starter set it a wonderful place to start, just to see what your options are for floors one and two. You don’t have to start there, as floor three is class and race selection. But I’m seeing more fun to be had by starting your humans (or animals, they give you that option as well) at the level 1 and having them fumble their way thru a sentient racoon filled New Orleans, or dealing with a pizza rat themed storyline.
As I read though, the one thing I want to build for myself and others may be a decent set of random tables. The one thing I could see this being intensive on the gamemaster is having to be random all the time. But when reading thru and seeing Jazz Club Racoon Drum Daddy, one has to think “Ok, so random animal roll, random location in the world for theming by the show, minimum of two tables to even start thinking like this”.
They give you a starting adventure that I have to read thru, and pregens for the Meadow Lark group and Carl and Donut. So if you want to do your own take on the books, it’s all there to starts you thru. Based on how you play, Brandon could make it to floor three and Carl could get taken out. That would change a few things.
I’ll keep going thru the books, posting my thoughts, and if I create anything cool, expect to see it here. If nothing else, it’s got the mind churning with idea’s.
